Nonantola Abbey
Churces & Abbeys "A spiritual walk"
The site is very rich of ecclesiastic buildings because it's on the ancient stepway of the pilgrimage to Rome from the North of Europe. In the past centuries these small villages on the hills were inhabited by poor people who couldn't afford to live in the big towns of the plain. Besides the priests were not rich enough to re-structure the old churches and abbeys. So you can find many examples of very ancient romanic architecture in the hills around the farmhouse.
Some of the more interesting are:
S. Maria Assunta
Monteveglio Cloister
S.Maria Assunta of Fagnano
Monteveglio Abbey
Pomposa Abbey
Nonantola Abbey

But the real jewels of the area are the churches and cathedrals of Emilia's towns, some of them have been declared "Artistic Heritage of the Humanity" by UNESCO

Modena Cathedral
S.Apollinare in Classe
Ferrara Cathedral
S. Stefano in Bologna
