Castles & Fortresses
The area between Modena & Bologna has always been a border line between two different cultures, ways of life, and furthermore religious believes and political faiths. Nowadays only soccer supporters give life to such conflicts between Modena and Bologna, but in the past many wars were fought and many castles were built in all the villages of the area.
That's the reason of the richness of defensive buildings around the hills of the country.
Many of them were spoiled and finally destroyed during the medieval fights or because of the natural events as earthquakes in the centuries. But most of them are still visitable.
